Primary Title
Western Landscape
Remarks
This painting was known for many years as "Mount Whitney." However, Gordon Hendricks has shown that title is incorrect because Bierstadt could not have seen Mt. Whitney until 1871. He also pointed out that the topography does not resemble that of Mt Whitney. Crystal Lake in southwest Mono County, near Yosemite, is a strong possibility since Bierstadt visited the Yosemite region in 1864. It is also possible that he paionted this painting in Europe before 1869 as a pastiche of separate elements he saw in the Yosemite region in 1864. [1981 Newark Museum Catalogue]
