David Drake worked for several Edgefield, NC pottery manufacturers run by his multiple enslavers. After emancipation, he continued to work as a turner in Edgefield potteries. Based upon the incised date and “LM,” this jug is attributed to Lewis Miles Stoneware Manufactory, Horsecreek Valley, Edgefield District, SC. Lewis Miles was one of Drake’s enslavers.
While the provenance history between this jug’s manufacture in 1852 and the current collector is not known, the jug appears to have stayed close to its original location.
