ProvenanceJo Sullivan assembled a collection of African printed textiles, primarily commemorative cloth, over the course of several decades of travel and research in western Africa. She began collecting the cloth while in the Peace Corps from 1969-70 in Zlehtown, Grand Jedeh County, Liberia. Sullivan returned to Liberia to conduct dissertation research from Dec. 1974 to July 1976 in Greenville, Sinoe County and in Monrovia. She received her Ph.D. in African history from Boston University in 1978. From 1983 to 1985, she was in Sokoto, northern Nigeria on a teaching Fulbright. This cloth was purchased by donor either in 1969-70 or in 1974-75. It was printed at ICODI in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.
